Agent 488

In the Second World War Allen Dulles, head of the OSS in Bern, filed reports from a source he numbered 488. The source was Carl Gustav Jung, reading Hitler and the German mind for the Allies. The same man kept a red leather book of visions he showed almost no one.

Jung held two lives at once. One was the clinician and the analyst of power, precise enough that an intelligence service took his reports as fact. The other went down into the unconscious and wrote what it found in the Liber Novus. He did not ask one life to explain away the other. He kept them both, and labelled them.

This house works the same way. The subject is the shadow: what a person refuses to see in themselves and meets instead in other people, in compulsions, in the body and in dreams. Every school that has studied it is here, and none of them is allowed to pretend to be another.

How to read this house

Four maps, never confused

Each concept on the site carries a label. The label says what kind of knowledge it is, so a reader can use a symbol without mistaking it for a finding.

Evidence

Replicated research: trials, measurements, effects that held up when other people looked.

Clinical

A clinical tradition with case literature and some trial support. Useful in practice, with parts of its theory still unproven.

Craft

Practical lore: strategy, exercises and rules of thumb that people use and pass on, largely untested.

Symbolic

Meaning-making. Images, correspondences and narratives that can move a person. It makes no claim about the physical world.

The desk

Shadow work, written down

Reading about the shadow changes little. Writing to it does. The desk holds six exercises, each from a different room, and keeps what you write.

  • The projection inventory. Who irritates you, and where you do the same.
  • The golden shadow. Who you admire, and the gift you refused.
  • The trigger log. The situation, the body, the story, the older story.
  • The thought record. The automatic thought, tried against the facts.
  • The empty chair. What was never said, said, and answered.
  • The dream journal. The figures, and the one that is you.

The work begins in the nigredo, the blackening
One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. C. G. Jung, “The Philosophical Tree”, 1945
